The subject of immigrants and how to deal with them has always been a rather sensitive one in the US and many politicians in the past have wisely chosen to either avoid it altogether or issue vague directives that they never follow up whenever they absolutely have to talk about it.
As such, it came as a big surprise when Mr. Trump decided to make it one of his pet subjects right from the moment he hit the campaign trail. And his position on the subject has been very radical and has attracted sharp criticism from many activists and human rights groups both from within and outside the United States.
FWD.us, an advocacy group started by Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg, is one of the groups that have voiced their concern over Trump’s position on immigration which they were quick to term as ‘absurd’. In an official statement posted by the group’s president, Mr. Todd Schulte, FWD us went ahead to advice Facebook users who were following Trump to unfollow him because of his immigration views.
Even though the statement did not specifically refer to Trump by name, the reference to the voices that yell for mass deportation was plain enough and did not leave much room for further immigration.
President Trump campaigned on a platform of keeping immigrants out of the US and has said time and again that he plans to deport more than 11 million illegal immigrants who are currently living in the states. Read more: Jim Larkin | Angel.co and Michael Lacey | LinkedIn
This is just one of the strategies that he plans to use in order to solve the immigration problem and the one that drew the sharpest criticism from FWD.us who said that such a move was simply impractical.
Not to mention the fact that it would cost the American taxpayer between 400 to 600 billion dollars to deport such a large population and that it could take up to 20 years to have them all deported.
The loss to the American economy would also be quite significant as it would lead to reduction of the country’s GDP by about $1.7 trillion, which is about 5 percent of the total GDP.
Under Trump’s presidency, immigration has quickly transformed into one of the biggest causes of division among people living in America. And the people of America have realized how much division and hatred the subject can brew if it is not handled properly. The Lacey and Larking Frontera Fund is one of the leaders in this fight in the state of Arizona where immigrants continue to suffer and have their rights violated.
Started by two journalists, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey the fund had $3.75 Million which the journalists received as settlement money after winning a case in which they were wrongfully arrested and detained.
The money from this fund is used to aid various groups and organizations that are deeply involved in the fight for the rights of migrants all over the state of Arizona. This month will mark the 10 year anniversary of the fund that was started back in October 2007 and has continued to grow bigger every year.
