Frontera Fund Fights for the DACA Program

Several attacks from the Republican Party extremist members have been fronted against the DACA program. The news of the attacks has not been well received by young immigrant organizations around the US.

DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and was established to cushion young immigrants who meet certain prerequisites in the US from facing deportation. In addition, the organization assists the young immigrants in acquiring a social security number and work permits to work in the US for a renewable period of two years. The program also enables the youths to acquire driving licenses and access to state tuition fees in most of the states in the US.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a letter to the Trump administration issued legal threats if actions are not taken by the administration to revoke the DACA program by September 5th. The letter proposes for a phasing off where new applications will not be processed and there will be no renewals for those that are already under the program. The demands of the letter were endorsed by nine attorney generals and one governor of the red state.

Earlier this week the Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly held a closed door meeting with members of the Hispanic Council to discuss the legal cases that are challenging the program which protects over 800,000 young immigrants. In the meeting, the state secretary stated that the program was in jeopardy. Kelly’s statement was worrisome and as a result dreamers and advocates started sounding the alarm.

The DACA program began its operation in 2012 and has been in existence for five years now. Besides benefiting young immigrants it has also contributed to growing the economy of the US. All DACA beneficiaries work or study in the US. Those that study contribute millions of dollars to colleges and universities where they study, while those that work pay taxes thus generating revenue to the US government. The program has been a success, and there are a good number of studies that can attest to this fact.

DACA is facing a huge threat, but its beneficiaries should not panic but rather push back any effort that is meant to eliminate DACA. Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund organization are in the forefront in the fight of ensuring that DACA is here to stay by providing information, assistance and guidance .

DACA was founded by President Obama on June 15, 2012. DACA policy was created with the aim of calling for deferred action among a certain undocumented group of young people who migrated to the US as children.

The Fight for Migrant Rights under Trump’s Administration

The subject of immigrants and how to deal with them has always been a rather sensitive one in the US and many politicians in the past have wisely chosen to either avoid it altogether or issue vague directives that they never follow up whenever they absolutely have to talk about it.

As such, it came as a big surprise when Mr. Trump decided to make it one of his pet subjects right from the moment he hit the campaign trail. And his position on the subject has been very radical and has attracted sharp criticism from many activists and human rights groups both from within and outside the United States.

FWD.us, an advocacy group started by Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg, is one of the groups that have voiced their concern over Trump’s position on immigration which they were quick to term as ‘absurd’. In an official statement posted by the group’s president, Mr. Todd Schulte, FWD us went ahead to advice Facebook users who were following Trump to unfollow him because of his immigration views.

Even though the statement did not specifically refer to Trump by name, the reference to the voices that yell for mass deportation was plain enough and did not leave much room for further immigration.

President Trump campaigned on a platform of keeping immigrants out of the US and has said time and again that he plans to deport more than 11 million illegal immigrants who are currently living in the states. Read more: Jim Larkin | Angel.co and Michael Lacey | LinkedIn

This is just one of the strategies that he plans to use in order to solve the immigration problem and the one that drew the sharpest criticism from FWD.us who said that such a move was simply impractical.

Not to mention the fact that it would cost the American taxpayer between 400 to 600 billion dollars to deport such a large population and that it could take up to 20 years to have them all deported.

The loss to the American economy would also be quite significant as it would lead to reduction of the country’s GDP by about $1.7 trillion, which is about 5 percent of the total GDP.

Under Trump’s presidency, immigration has quickly transformed into one of the biggest causes of division among people living in America. And the people of America have realized how much division and hatred the subject can brew if it is not handled properly. The Lacey and Larking Frontera Fund is one of the leaders in this fight in the state of Arizona where immigrants continue to suffer and have their rights violated.

Started by two journalists, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey the fund had $3.75 Million which the journalists received as settlement money after winning a case in which they were wrongfully arrested and detained.

The money from this fund is used to aid various groups and organizations that are deeply involved in the fight for the rights of migrants all over the state of Arizona. This month will mark the 10 year anniversary of the fund that was started back in October 2007 and has continued to grow bigger every year.
